The process of handling the insurance claim for your roof damage
First, contact a certified roofing contractor
- The first step in handling the insurance claim for your roof is to contact a certified roofing contractor, such as our team at Allstate Roofing and Construction General Contractor.
- We will come out and inspect your roof, go over with you what we will have to do to fix your roof, and give you a fair, transparent quote.
Next, start the claims process
- After a contractor, such as us, confirms the damage to your roof, contact your insurance company. You call your insurance company’s claims department—not your agent.
- Your insurance company will send an adjuster out to your property to assess the damage for the insurance company. Ideally, you will want us present so that we can point out the areas of damage and concern to your adjuster. This part of the process is called the damage assessment.
- Make sure you ask your adjuster important questions that will allow you to gain clarity on their claims process.
After the inspection by the adjuster…
The insurance company send you a claims summary that will outline the repairs and/or replacement that they approve. Once you receive this, you will want to send us a copy. Afterwards, we will work directly with the insurance company over the scope of the project. This is to ensure that you and everyone involved in the process understand the details of the roof repair.
- If there is a discrepancy between the assessment by the insurance company and our own damage assessment (which may lead to a funding issue), we will work to resolve the issue with your carrier.
- Some carriers will send the initial check for your project at the same time the claims summary arrives. If the check has your mortgage company’s name on it, you will have to contact them as soon as possible to get their endorsement. This procedure will have to be repeated in the event of a supplemental check.
- Your initial check may seem small as compared to the actual cost of the roof. This is because most homeowners have a replacement cost value policy (RCV) instead of an actual cost value (ACV) policy, meaning depreciation will be withheld by your carrier. Allstate Roofing and Construction General Contractor will recover this from the insurance company after the roofing project is completed.
- By law, you will have to pay your deductible directly to us as your contractor.
Then, the project begins
- After we receive the initial insurance check, your deductible, and the insurance loss statement, the roofing project begins.
- The project timeline is established, the roofing materials arrive, and the crew comes out to complete the project.
- All of our professional crew members will be personally supervised by the project manager. We will work diligently to complete the project on time.
After the project…
- We will provide you documentation that you will provide to the insurance company to notify them about the completion of the project. If we are able to recover depreciation, we will ask for those funds to be released.
- After the insurance company receives confirmation from you that the project is complete, they will release the final check. Once again, it may have your mortgage company’s name on the check and you will have to go through the endorsement procedure of your mortgage company.
- Once you receive the final check, you will provide that check to us and your roofing project will be paid for in full.
